I’d be the first one to admit that I’m not the brightest bulb. I do make mistakes, but I should have known better.
So I was cooking on the stove and like an idiot, I started a grease fire. Continuing the idiot theme I did not have a fire extinguisher. I just moved into my new apartment and one of the things I forgot to get was something that can put out fires.
Don’t Be That Guy
I’m the type of guy who thinks I’ll never start a fire so no need for a fire extinguisher. Boy was I wrong.
On a side note, this makes me wonder why apartment buildings don’t just give you a fire extinguisher? Better yet why is there no services for fire extinguishers that go around to houses to make sure you’re covered and know how to use one?
Sometimes Frugal Can Be Costly
Since I’m cheap or Frugal as I call it I needed a fire extinguisher. The problem is that I don’t know the first thing about Fire Extinguishers. How many do I need? What Type do I need? Shoot I don’t even know where to keep the thing.
I’m willing to bet I’m not the only one with these questions. Hopefully, this post will help you as I journey to find these answers. When writing this it did come to mind that fire extinguishers are boring so sorry about that.
As for the grease fire that I started earlier, it was controlled by my smart girlfriend who put a lid on the pan to kill the oxygen to the fire. So incase you don’t have someone like my girlfriend handy then this guide should be able to help you a bit.
Like to point out
I would like to point out that being frugal when it comes to safety and human lives should not really go together. How much saved doesn’t matter when you’re house has burned down.
What You Get?
I like to jump to the point when it comes to my post. I ended up getting one of these First Alert AF400 Tundra Fire Extinguisher Aerosol Spray. ad I’ll be honest. It was cheap. It looks simple to use, I for one never used a fire extinguisher before and if a fire is going on I don’t have time to read directions. I do, like many others, know how to spray a can. So this would also work for people who don’t know how to use a fire extinguisher like I do.
Some people like this product, and some don’t. This is what sucks about buying things like this. I need this product to work when I really need it. A fire extinguisher not working is not the same as my iPad not working, one will allow the house to burn down and the other will be a paper weight.
Feeling paranoid like I am I got a second regular fire extinguisher.
Having a regular fire extinguisher around is more costly, but like I said early when it comes to things like safety and human lives cost is pointless if you loose a life or your house.
I was very particular of this white fire extinguisher as it was for putting out grease fires. Probably the most common fire in the kitchen will be a grease fire. Its such a problem that now companies that sell cooking oil put warning labels on their products. You could even use this stuff to run your car on with some modifications. Neat!
But What Do I Buy?!
You can’t just buy a Fire Extinguisher and call it done. There exist many types that you must use to effective put the fire out. Somethings like Grease Fires can’t be put out with water. Water would actually make things worse for a grease fire.
